um, question: I got a call today that i won the monthly drawing for marriott's dream win indulge vacation. 50,000 united miles, $500 Visa Card and a trip to one of four places. the thing is, it says at the bottom of the sweepstakes that "this promotion is being used for the purpose of soliciting time shares." has anyone heard of this? is this a scam or ploy, or is this an opportunity for a nice trip for four to Singer Island Florida? :sunny:

thanks guys for any input or insights.....

I suspect that it is what they say it is.

Most likely a high pressure attempt to sell a time share.

I'd google various inquiries about time shares (timeshare complaints, costs, contracts, etc.) if I were you. The results on some site aren't very flattering.

Here's one I found after I google "selling timeshares": http://tug2.net/timeshare_advice/cold_hard_facts_about_selling_your_timeshare.shtml

I also googled "what are time share maintenance fees" and found some very interesting articles.

thanks curmogeon for your input!!

UPDATE:
I called the number back and sure enough, i did not "win" the sweepstakes. they offered me 80% off a vacation. I politely declined and he was very nice and hung up...

oh well, maybe next time

I suspect that in these economic times, the timeshare companies are getting even more aggressive (and creative) in their sales tactics than they have been in the past. I owned a Marriott timeshare until just recently. There was no way to unload it - couldn't sell it for a dollar, couldn't even give it away to charity because of the never ending increases in maintenance fees. And with more and more people not paying them, the burden is falling on those who do. I spent months trying to get them to take it back and we'd call it even. No dice. Went through a timeshare cancellation company and finally, after refusing to make my payments for 6 months or more, and sending letters and threatening to send more letters to everyone under the sun, they offered a deed in lieu of foreclosure option and I accepted. Had I not been successful, that timeshare would have stayed with us for the rest of my life and my son's life after that and on and on with no cap on the fees. It cost me a little to do it, but well worth it in the long run.
