Here are some tips to deal with medical bills, you have to be persistent and willing to go through many hoops, but it can help:
Ask for a detailed itemized bill. If there are any items that are billed just as codes, state you want to know what those codes are for. Go over this with a fine toothed comb. You will often find many things that you were charged for but did not get.
Call the billing department, state you are self pay and in dire need of help with the bill. Often they will discount the bill, or refer you to resources that will help with part if not all of it.
Nitpick the crap out of your bill if they will not negotiate or be reasonable. If they charged you an outrageous amount of money for something, like $20 for tylenol, call them on it. If they still will not relent, tell them you are going to go to the state medical board, your local news station, and the local paper about the outrageous charges.
If at all possible, use an urgent care center (doc in a box) for things that are not a life or death emergency, like stitches or a sprained ankle. They are much cheaper than an ER.
Tell your doctor that you are self pay, and ask if there is a cheaper medicine, test, or treatment available. There often is, but you have to pry it out of them.
Go to your local low-income health clinic instead of private doctors. You may have to wait forever to get in, and it won't be fancy, but even paying their full price is usually way cheaper than regular doctors.
