crashing computer

:cussing: i've just about had it with my computer and hubby can't seem to take the time to work with it to fix it. and he built it for pete's sake. here's what it's doing: ie crashes at random intervals. some days it works fine, others it crashes every other site. video dissapears on random days and times. power stays on but no video. sometimes it reboots when it does it. i have to turn it off, wait, and turn it back on. it says it's recovered from a serious problem, but that's about it. :error:

i thought it was maybe the video card, or the computer overheating, so we checked the fans, they're working fine (and we regularly clear the dust from it to make sure it keeps working). i don't know if the video card would make the computer reboot or not. we tried wiping the drive and reinstalling windows to correct the ie crashing, but to no avail.

spyware is run at least once a day. can't run antivirus, it gets a few minutes into it and picture goes down. every time. its the only time i can predict that we'll loose video. i even tried right after installing everything new, and it did the same thing.

i know nothing about computers other than using the internet, playing movies and cd's, and using microsoft office applications. after that i'm lost. if anyone has any ideas, please help!!!

thanks so much! :crazytongue:

When you did the reinstall, did you set restore points before adding progs?

If you can't resolve this, try doing that - add progs slowly, over days instead of hours, and setting restore points so if you suddenly start crashing, you can pinpoint the conflict.

The serious error message should give you a reference # so you can maybe find out what it is that way?

Has this happened ever since he built it? If yes, did he buy the memory sticks at the same time/from the same batch? If not, it could be a hardware rather than a software conflict.

I'm wiped - stayed up too darn long!!! :nono: I'll check back in after I sleep, OK? :sleepy:

i'll talk to hubby and see if i can get him to try that. i'm not sure how to do any of it, but he knows it step by step. it never did that until we hooked the computer up to the internet, even then it didn't start for several months. the computer used to only be used for his graphic arts projects.

*sigh* i have faith it'll get fixed, but, lol, in the mean time it's frustrating!

Hmm, not being able to antivirus and it happening later than 1st going online sounds like a cootie :nono:

If you decide to post at G4:

The best way to post is to put the name of your problem in the title instead of "help", the regulars will skip over "help" posts.

Give as much info as possible; system specs (XP or 98... & if you have antivirus, firewall, etc...) problem & when it started (after a d/l, clicked on a link, visited a webpage, etc....) & what you have already tried.

Please remember to post back on what did/didn't work & thank those that tried to help. :headbang:

yes and no. lol. i'm so frustrated. it was crashing horribly since we last talked and getting worse by the day. hubby finally looked at the computer this weekend after it died completely last week. it would start to power up and then power off. he found a loose connection with the power supply, after fixing that he did some more investigating and found the motherboard is running way too hot and will fry probably pretty soon. we just got it back up and running for now. i was using our friends computer just to get through the sweeps i was already doing before it died, but the monitor was too fuzzy to really read or do much of anything.

right now i'm crossing my fingers and pryaing this thing keeps running long enough that we can replace that part. i never realized how addicted i was to sweeping until i went through withdrawls. lol. hubby loved that. if i had known what was wrong with it i would held on to that 50 i won on the bewell sweeps and not spent it on my new printer. i feel dumb. but i got it before knowing what was really wrong. hubby thought at first it was just the video card or maybe the power supply. maybe i'll get lucky and eventually win a computer in a sweep. lol.

sorry i didn't write sooner, but please bear with me. i'll keep you updated on the progress. here's to hoping that that one part is all we need to fix it for a long, long time .

thanks again!

good news amy! our motherboard finally fried out completely. so hubby ordered a "bare bones" kit that had everything except the fan and heat sink. he purchased those and got us a whole new computer set up. i'm now sweeping faster and happier than ever! :headbang: i'm so happy!!!

thanks again for all the help!
