Cracking knuckles

I have been watching my niece for a while and she cracks her knuckles constantly. I told her I would look up if it will hurt her joints later. Well it may not cause arthritis but it might make your hands weaker. And it drives me crazy  She's 9 and she does it all the time. Her parents do it so I guess that explains it.

She told me yesterday her ankle pops all the time also. That just can't be good when you're 9.

Are her joints hypermobile (like, can she bend her hand or fingers back further than normal) Some of the same genetic stuff that causes congenital cataract is linked to Marfan's and related connective tissue disorders. Main problem with some of those is not the joint popping-its the heart problems. Does she ever faint or have difficulty with exercise?

She doesn't exercise but you know her mom (my sister) passes out. I will keep this in mind as she gets older. Oh and her mom does crack her knuckles a lot also.

Good idea to keep an eye on it.The same defect that can make knuckes easy to "pop" and joints "pop" spontaneously can also make parts of the heart too "stretchy". This isn't good when a lot of blood is going through there under pressure. This link is about Marfan's and heart disease, but there are dozens of milder related disorders, with lesser but similar effects...
