I didn't know this made the news, tho I looked it up and that was def worth my five minutes.
I remember a similar thing happened a couple years ago when some kind of bookshop mailed out that everyone won a $100 gift card. I think most people would have been pretty understanding if the guy had said something like "Sorry everyone, I messed up here and can't afford to send 1,000 of you $100 since I'm a small, independent business". But instead, he got defensive and went with "I can't believe you're all so gullible to think you won this LoL!!1" instead. Then he basically got review-blasted off the internet.
The makers of Charmin are some huge conglomerate tho I believe so they wouldn't even have that excuse.
The answer of course is to do what 98% of brand/sweepstakes companies do and contact the winners personally instead of with some auto-form. You think you're gonna save a couple pennies on labor with that till the one time you program "reply all".
