Can I request cash instead of a prize that I won?

I was delighted to hear that I won a trip package - the first time I have won something big like this! However, the timing is pretty difficult for me. When is it appropriate to ask for cash instead?

amfree - It never hurts to ask, but unless they note cash in LIEU in their rules, they most likely will turn you down.

This makes sense, since parts of the prize are usually a quid pro quo for [other than the main] sponsor(s) to get "free" ads/promotion of their goods/services in exchange
