Wow. I know some companies can do sleazy things - but this one is VERY VERY LAME:

A musician named Tonedeff won the Lolapalooza Last Band Standing contest in 2006. Part of the prize package was “$10,000 worth of equipment from our friends at Gibson. (yes, believe it!).” Well, Tonedeff believed it, and he’s spent the last year and a half trying to get Gibson to make good on their promise. As Tonedeff notes on his blog, maybe he should have seen this coming when Don Pitts—Gibson’s Ambassador of Empty Promises (show above with devil eyes)—told him, “I mean, this is kind of weird, because you know, you DON’T play the guitar or drums.” - The Consumerist

The article goes on to talk about all the back and forth Gibson has done to this guy, and go over all the broken promises (he was supposed to win a photoshoot too - never happened). Read all about it here: http://consumerist.com/348960/gibson-screws-musician-out-of-10000-worth-of-equipment and at the guy’s own blog here: http://blog.qn5.com/2008/general/rant-gibson-hates-hip-hop .His blog is VERY interesting and in detailed (some rough language too)

How MANY times have all of US vet SWEEPERS warned others of this happening... The SPONSER is not obligated to you and YOUR lucky win & YOU the WINNER should be very GRATEFUL if they fulfill the ROLE they promised to play. This HAPPENS alot from what I have read... Many of the PAGENTS have had this occur & I could go on naming companys but again it would be SPONSER bashing which is banned... :error:  More SWEEPS

Thank you for sharing this - I've forwarded it on to a friend of mine who runs a rap review website, so he can share it with an even larger segment of the public.

The sponsor in question here deserves EVERY BIT of bad press they get from this.

I would use extreme caution regarding articles like this posted on the internet especially when someone's reputation is called into play. More times than not, these internet postings are revenge-oriented against a company or person for various reasons never to be revealed and the facts distorted to solicit support and compassion from the public.

Unfortunately, in cases where the allegations were unfounded, the damage to the company or person has already been done through the wild fire-type spreading of copying and pasting from the original source to other websites throughout the internet.

I'm not saying that these types of internet postings are all untrue, but just to be careful before passing on the information. Maybe, search for several known and reliable sources as backup first.

LIDARKSIDE, If you knew me better. You would know I check and double check any link before I post it. In this case the rapper has posted emails (both his and the sponsors). All you have to do is read his blog (and remember this guy is not a sweeper, so he is not familiar with protocol or how to handle sponsors)...
I have not posted on SA in quite some time on a regular basis for several reasons.
#1. Last year my family and I went through several surgery's and health crisis's
#2. SA IS nicer and more well behaved than other sweeping boards out there, BUT there still seems to be a a group of people that like to knock others posts and try and slander them.
#3. I am too busy sweeping and taking care of my family to get involved with petty arguments and disputes.

Have a nice day, and here is hoping everyone has a great win today!

Maybe, you misunderstood me. My post wasn't directed against your post in general. I was just saying that maybe there are better sources to find the info on as backup like a newspaper article, a magazine article. I know I'd feel much more comfortable about a blog post if I could see more known sites backing the story up.

My post was not to argue your post or mean any disrespect, but it just hit a note with me remembering someone's business suffering after some posts started making the rounds about his site which ended up be untrue in the end.

I'm just wondering if this story possibly came about from the winner being disqualified for one reason or another, and he was angry feeling that they still owed him the prize, etc., and started blogging or posting about it with his story.

I'm not saying the story isn't true.

I got a forum link from Gibson's site with posts and information on this story there. Apparently, this is a big mess. From what I can tell, a former employee ran this promotion without approval from Gibson, and Gibson was not even listed as the sponsor in the rules. The posts are recent. My guess is that they're running amuck with their legal department figuring out what to do in fixing this mess.

Once again (and for the last time as I am out of here, and will not post again on this site for a very long time...thank you very much) READ the links I posted BEFORE you diss them, this guy has posted the emails from the sponsor, showing he was NOT disqualified, they just have not fulfilled the contest win (after almost 2 years, and the headaches he has gone through to get his prize, which still has not been awarded)

 We all MEAN well when WE post items we find that we might think is interesting and information to all of our SWEEPING club. No one is OUT to HARM anyone with INFORMATION we post. You all have to be EXTREMELY careful because SOME sweepers such as a SA INDIVIDUAL in our club writes back to the ORIGINAL writers & tells them SO and so STOLED i/s using your writings/ Postings on SA and TRYS to make a STIRR out of nothing because shes hateful and jealous and being BORED & NO life, I just received a NOTE from a CLOSE friend ON another site which was my HOME b4 I came to SA that this SA individual was trying to stirr up trouble & sent me A letter from the creepy lady SA sweeper ( Shes done this several times now) COMPLAINING I STOLE the article of good RULES for SWEEPERS and SANDRA SAID that Im more than welcome to use her postings ( I GOT PERMISSION) PREHAND BUT SWEEPERS should beware ONLY use ONE or TWO lines of the post with a LINK to the article because the ARTICLE belongs to the COMPANY of the PERSON who wrote it ( NEW YORK TIMES) ECT & they will get charged a fee plus SA will get charged a FEE ect .. I mean a HUGH amount of money because SA did NOT DELETE THE WRITINGS who belong to another. ..Lets NOT fight GIRLS pleaseeeeee Its DEBATE not HATE... PLEASE ms GREEN... Dont LEAVE us , She means no harm, Shes simple stating from whats happend in the past I believe. ... I LOVE you here... I LOVE your posts.. I found your info to be quite a eye opener BUT I as well as all remembers was fooled a few months BACK on a STARBUCKS issue article...I love the OTHER chatter as well but dont EVERYONE get defensive over EVERY little thing WRITTEN ON THE FORUM sites... Put DOWN the WEAPONS... LETS have FUN PLEASEEEE ...

Apparently there has been so much publicity about Gibson not giving the guy his prize after almost 2 years of excuses...they FINALLY gave in and gave him his prize!

Yay Internets! Tonedeff—the artist who won Lollapalooza's Last Band Standing over a year ago but never received the 10k prize package from Gibson—has received his prize. He emailed us today and wrote, "Thanks for covering the story and your support. Your blog made a HELL of a difference. Expect a shout out on my next project." We can't imagine how he's going to work "consumerist" into a rhyme, but okay. After the story went Digg-public last Friday, Tonedeff got a call from a Gibson rep Saturday morning—and a few days later he received an apology from Gibson's CEO personally.

Well, this past Tuesday, I had a one-on-one conversation with Gibson CEO, Henry Juszkiewicz. Now, it's rare that a CEO of a company that size will sit down on the phone with you and talk man to man, so for that, I was very impressed with the level of commitment and cooperation they showed in order to demonstrate the level of seriousness with which they took this whole situation. Henry assured me that this was something that Gibson was truly apologetic for and made his best effort to make sure that I came away from the entire experience feeling as though I was treated fairly and received what I deserved.
The next day, Tonedeff received a FedExed check for the full amount of the prize.
The Gibson rep who strung Tonedeff along last year left the company in November:

Henry mentioned that Don was "getting toasted" in the press and hoped that I could encourage folks to "take it easy on the guy" because apparently dude's been getting hate mail & phone calls up the yang from random folks around the world. I've never been the type of person to wish malice or pain on anyone (unless they rap), and I stand by that approach still. Personally, I think the public spanking that's already occurred is sufficient, considering this is something that will probably come up anytime someone Googles his name for a long time. That would definitely suck if I were him, so it is what it is. So, if anyone was planning on doing any wild poo, this would be a good time to put the bazooka away. Everything is settled.
Finally, Tonedeff tells everyone thanks:
In closing, I want to take this opportunity to thank EVERY SINGLE ONE OF YOU who took time out to lend your support, write letters, post blogs, make phone calls - once again, you helped settle this thing at lightning speed.
Glad we could help!

"The Power of the Internet"

how it got settled and the apology from Gibson CEO
http://blog.qn5.com/2008/general/the-power-of-the-internet
For those of you who are just catching on, last Tuesday, after a year and a half of waiting, I decided to go public with the now infamous prize-fulfillment situation with Gibson Guitars and wrote this blog. Friday morning, I hopped on Firefox to find my inbox flooded and my screen bombarded with IMs, because the story had broken wide open on The Consumerist. Within an hour, the story was ranked #1 on Digg.com. Later that day, I checked my phone messages to find 2 voicemails and a couple of missed calls from a Gibson rep, looking to “get this situation all squared away”, because what I went through “was totally bullcrap and it shouldn’t have happened.” They even called me on a Saturday morning! I mean, damn…THAT, my friends, is the power of the internet.

I’ve been completely overwhelmed by the show of support from thousands of people from all over the world, who uniformly made enough noise to reach the top of the corporate heap. There have been countless words written on this already, youtube videos, emails, fans offering to donate their personal gear – hell, I was even contacted by news stations. I was FLOORED by the response.

Well, this past Tuesday, I had a one-on-one conversation with Gibson CEO, Henry Juszkiewicz. Now, it’s rare that a CEO of a company that size will sit down on the phone with you and talk man to man, so for that, I was very impressed with the level of commitment and cooperation they showed in order to demonstrate the level of seriousness with which they took this whole situation. Henry assured me that this was something that Gibson was truly apologetic for and made his best effort to make sure that I came away from the entire experience feeling as though I was treated fairly and received what I deserved.

The very next morning there was a FedEx envelope on my desk from Gibson.

In a nutshell, they matched the original prize value and it’s all going to my credit cards as we speak to pay for the gear I couldn’t afford.

My faith in Gibson is restored. :headbang: This is good, because I would like to buy a guitar some time this year, if I do not win one.

It's unfortunate that Tonedeff AND Gibson had to trudge through this BS, all because of one employee who refused to do their job correctly.
