Arkansas Ice Storm

Well, it seems that central and northern Arkansas is getting hit by an ice storm. The current temp. here in Greenbrier is only 26 degrees, with a light falling rain. There are icicles on the bushes and trees, as well as on the car windows. The roads are not bad yet around here...but that will change by later tonight. The ice storm warnings are up until sometime Wednesday...woo hoo!

Everyone who will be affected by this ice storm please stay inside if you don't need to be out.

yep we will be getting it tonight into tomorrow. fun. Im sure they will cancel school tomorrow.. double fun, oops I mean triple fun.

everyone stay safe and off the roads..

It has already started here. They said this could be the worse storm here since 1994. That storm closed off us off from the world for over a week. Our power was off for 4 days...

They are saying 1-2 inches of freezing rain with 3-6 inches of snow on top before the 2nd round moves in tomorrow and adds more freezing rain and then snow on top of it...anyone want to babysit a kid for a while???

Ask me if I miss the winter weather of the Midwest.

 - Nope not one bit! It was a nice sunny day here today with clear skies tonight.

There was a day I thought you were a sweetheart. Not so much today! It's 10 degrees with more snow in the forecast! I think you are almost as mean as the Hawaiian! Where the heck is Rita anyway?

 She's probably down at the beach sifting the sand between her toes!

Stay safe, Sticks.

We've had them and from what I gather, you are not in the middle of a big city either.

I hope you have backup. THe one storm we had back in 1993 or 94, we were without power for over 3 weeks. :nono:

Welcome to farm life :error:

The way the freezing rain is coming down it isn't looking good for us...it is coming down hard. Jimmie is suppose to go to work tomorrow morning but I doubt he gets out of the driveway. I will be nuts if I am stuck in this house for days, without power, with both girls and Jimmie ~ pray for me

Is there anything worse than being without power, for days/weeks, in the middle of winter? I hope it doesn't come to that for any of you. It was so bad here last month. It took over 3 weeks for everyone to get their power back.

Ice storms are so pretty....and so deadly.:error: You do have back up (non electric) heat, right Sticks?

Yes, fortunately, I have a propane hot water heater and a propane heat stove...so if the power goes out here, at least I will be able to stay warm. I also have charcoal and lighter fluid to use in the outdoor grill by my front door if I need it.

My area is under a Winter Storm Warning, with up to 3 inches of ice expected by Wednesday afternoon. Uh, the trees and power lines around here cannot handle 3 inches of ice. I seriously doubt they could withstand 2 inches of ice...but I will probably find out.

Back in 1982, I lived in Sheridan in south-central Arkansas...at the edge of town in an old house in the pine trees. A major ice storm hit the area, knocking out power. I darned near froze to death, since the house had only electric heat. I made do with kerosene lamps and lots of blankets on the bed. I could lay in bed at night and here the shotgun-like snap of the breaking pine tree branches as the ice weighed them down. The old Wal-Mart in town was open, despite the lack of power. Employees had flashlights and would allow three or four customers to enter the store at one time, and would be led to the items they wanted to purchase. You ain't ever been in darkness until you've spent some time in a huge, windowless, box that is...pitch black inside away from the front entrance. Holy cow..... :crazytongue:

It was the ice storm a couple of years ago that made Dad finally get a whole house generator. Power was out for five days and it was below freezing every day. At the apartment only had electric heat and had to sleep in the hospital outpatient surgery waiting room because so many trees were down that was the only place we could get to.
interesting Carbon Monoxide and Charcoal link:

I knew it was dangerous to use indoors, but did not know it could be dangerous even when it appeared to be "out"

I live in southern Ohio and we have about 4 inches of snow already this morning and still pouring heavy snow. they are predicting the ice to hit us this evening and tonight. the big ice storm we had in 2003 we had no power for 6 days! lucky for us we have a gas well on our property and have heat hooked to it so we still have heat without electric and I also have my cook stove hooked to it so we can stick it out if we have to (not that I want to go thru that again) . good luck to everyone in this storms path and if u loose electric check to see if the red cross has any shelters in your area. I am on call for shelter set up for our area thru them so they already are anticipating having to open a couple of shelters for our area. not all areas have local red cross chapters but u should check if u have no heat.

well mine are home for the second day in a row.. We got about 8 inches of snow. Its very pretty. I know AK and some parts of MO got hit real hard with ice. hope everyone is ok.

We had ice, snow and freezing rain here. I wrote about my adventure in another thread.

Has anyone talked to Sticks today? Is he ok? :)

I turned on the news this morning and they were talking about the storm hitting some states. They showed a guy's car sliding into freezing water. The firefighters had to save him while the car was sliding. The guy was ok. There are people getting into alot of accidents because of the ice and snow. Here in California, if we get a drizzle of rain, people here get in accidents.

 Here I am! I managed to survive the ice storm. All was well for me until the power went out about 9:30pm last night. The lights started to dim and brighten and flicker...it was barely noticeable. A few seconds before the power went out, I had this thought in my mind, "Oh boy, the lights are fixing to go out."....and they certainly did. The power was out until 6am Wednesday morning.

Well, after about 30 minutes with no power, I decided to hit the road. So I locked up the darkened house and made my way to my truck. I drove 13 miles to Conway, and parked in a shopping center parking lot. I had all the creature comforts I needed...a climate-controlled truck cab, a decently comfortable truck seat, the radio, and a good book. I actually dozed for an hour or so.

Then I drove back to Greenbrier (the roads were still okay at this point). I parked my truck under the canopy of a darkened Citgo truck stop, and watched as two Entergy trucks worked on the power lines across the road from the Citgo. By this time, the freezing rain had stopped and it changed over to snow. It snowed like crazy for awhile, until it left about 1-2 inches of snow on the ground.

The storm has moved on, the roads are clear, and it is just really cold now. I hope others made it through the bad weather just fine.

Hey, Wolfie, I heard that!

It's 78 degrees inside, warmer and sunny outside today.

Hope Tammy's generator works so she can make lots of hot Chocolate Sweepstakes & Giveaways. :)
