Right, I live in a apartment complex. In the lease it clearly says no pets. Yet, this morning walking past my neighbors window I noticed a black cat sitting in the window. I'm not going to be a jerk and tell the landlord but it pisses me off. Not because I hate animals but because I have a cat that I miss who I had to leave with my mother in West Virginia because this lease said no pets.
 
A lot of landlords with a "no pets clause" in their leases will still allow cats but usually only if they are declawed. I had a landlord that didn't mind the tenants having cats as long as they were declawed. Of course, we asked first.
 
I've lived in about 20 different places in 6 different states, and we always had pets. Most "no pets" clauses are negotiable, especially if you're willing to pay a bit more security deposit. Did you ask?
 
They're mainly concerned with people having animals, because they don't want the apartment damaged--ripped and pulled rugs, scratched floors, doors, etc.

I haven't asked but I'm surely going to. :scratch: , might have to wait till I get more $ for additional security deposit money.

He is to lazy to do anything of the sort even though he still has claws. He sleeps 90% of the day.
 
Unfortunately, your landlord doesn't know that. Hopefully, he takes you word for it.

Our landlord, at the time, didn't charge us any additional money for the retainer when we got the cat.
 
We are in central Illinois and Most all the landlords will allow cats and small dogs for an extra deposit fee at the apartments.
Would hate being without my animals
 
Sometimes they just copy the leases from a master copy somewhere and the landlord does not actually care about pets-esp. if the place is run down to start with. My last landlord had a lease that said everything from "no pets" to "no smoking" and, as it turned out, he did not really care about anything this side of the destruction of the major load bearing walls. I could've raised chickens in there...
 
I owned to rental homes and allowed animals with no additional deposit. I never had any problem until the last renter. She had a dog that was not house trained and ate the garage door. Not really the dogs fault, she left him tied out to the door with no food or water all day when it was very hot. I was more pissed about that then the door. She kept looking at me like I was crazy because I was getting on her about leaving him with no food or water and not about the door. I have found if the people are good clean people a pet will not make a difference. And if they are dirty and nasty, they usually do allot more damage then the pet. But if you haven't figured it out I really love animals , they are much better renters then people. lol
