Another scam to warn everyone about!

I know someone posted earlier about a fake delivery alert, and we all should be aware not to open those links. But I have had 2 phone calls in the past week from a number allegedly in Auburn, Washington. The callers have heavy accents, maybe from India, and they tell me that my computer has malicious malware that I MUST allow them to help me get rid of. The callback on the phone number on my caller ID is not valid- it is not in service anywhere in the United States. NEVER give them any information, and hang up on them pronto! It's a shame that sweepers have to be aware of the CREEPERS out there wanting to do us harm! Heads up, everybody!

Thanks for sharing. I don't take any of those things seriously. I get messages all the time in my email saying that too.

The malicious malware scam isn't necessarily because you enter sweepstakes. My daughter, who doesn't enter any, has gotten 4 of those calls while I enter many sweeps and have gotten only 2. The second time they called I told them they must have the wrong number because I didn't own a computer. They hung up on me. All it takes is having a telephone ... they robocall .... 555-555-1000, then 555-555-1001 etc. So is doesn't matter if your phone is unlisted or not either. And you are correct ... don't give them any info and just hang up! Happy Sweeping All!

I've gotten that call at my office which does not have a computer, so it must have been quite the surprise when I said to them "really, that's funny since we don't have a computer".

got the same call about a week ago i pretty much gave them fits the guy got so mad because i called him out on his scam he hung up on me. also we get tons of fake fed ex emails and dhl emails all are fake and should not be opened.

I have had similar phone calls. The caller said someone was trying to hack my computer and they would be willing to help and stop them if I would give them some info about my system. If they knew someone was hacking in to my system, they would already know my info, right? I asked them that and if they were trying to hack in. They said oh no sir, no. I then asked them why they were trying to hack in and they hung up.

I keep getting the DHL alert to a link that goes no where . I also got that call and told them no thanks my computer is fine! Then I hung up on them. They just keep talking. Their English is so limited.

I got this call last week too. I hung up on the guy. He had my first and last name. When I hung up on him he called back and I did not answer. He told me the same thing that their was a problem with my computer. I knew it was a scam because the computer I have is in my moms name and not mine.

A few obvious red flags:

Did you enter such a raffle?

Wouldn't you expect to receive written notification, including an affidavit which needs to be notarized, for such a huge prize?

Meet at a bank so you can give them money? Seriously? Taxes are reported to the IRS first, and if you owe, you pay the IRS when you file your income tax.

Thanks for posting the scam. It is always good for people to be reminded to think, ask questions and be careful. Don't pay anyone. That's not how sweeps work. That's how scammers work.

Call your local police and tell them about your call. Ask if they will work with you to set up a sting operation at your bank to nab the fraudsters. You will be greatly helping prevent any future victims from falling for the scam. Some police departments may be really short on funding and resources so let us know what the cops advise you and if they will do the sting.
