A question about virus attacks

When we enter our sweeps primarily through SA how in the world do some of these Trojan things or whatever they are called come through the virus protectors that are in place here. Like when I was going to TooFab afterwards I was notified by my protector that a virus was attacking my computer. Now I avoid that site and haven't had a problem

If I understood any of this computer stuff I wouldn't be asking my question. So come on guru's
fill me in, please.
 
I am not a guru, but when you click on a sweeps listed thru SA you go to the site of the sweeps, leaving SA. SA just list the sweeps and cannot control the content of the sites that are running the sweeps. When you are on the actual sweeps site, if there is a virus active it will get you.
