A win

I won first prize which is a hat and a pool float from the dinner in the swamp sweepstake from the history channel but they require my social security number. Is that safe to provide?

Hi...I know the affys ask for that when you win a large prize but I'm surprised they would send an affy for that amount. I suppose the History Channel is as safe as possible and the people who win a lot will probably say it's usual and OK, but for me, those two things are not worth the risk. I'm sorry if that sounds mean or rude...I'm just old and anal retentive...see what the others have to say. Congratulations on the win and I hope it works out for you.

There are no free rides.

IRS requires payment of taxes on all winnings. Sponsors are not required to send out 1099 forms for winning under $600 and most people probably don't report those under $600 winnings. Occasionally you'll find a sponsor who wants a SS# for winnings under $600 - probably to support their own tax deduction of the $6oo as a legitimate business expense.

ealeksandra,

I moved your other post, "A Win and a question" to Questions and Answers, and I sent you a PM explaining that site owner/administrator, Ken, has asked us to keep the Winner's Circle just for reporting simple wins, because it links to the homepage.

A few people have already replied to your post in Q&A. The new title is, "Question about a win." Please look there for the replies.
