Newsletters-----Affect Chances

Hi everyone-

I'm pretty new to Contests and Sweepstakes, but I already have a question.

Most contests/sweeps I enter have a box to check, if you want to receive more information
or sign up for their newsletter, etc.

Do you think people who agree to receive more information have a better chance at winning?
Do you think it's important to check these boxes???

I really don't want to end up with a whole lot of garbage in my email, but I don't want to lower
my chances of winning, just because I didn't choose to receive a company's newsletter, either.

What do you think?

Thanks,
Happy sweeping!

Most questions new sweepers have are answered in the various stickied threads in the forums:

Hi, I've got a question--does it increase your odds of winning if you select the option to receive their emails?

Signing up for newsletters DOES NOT increase your chances of winning. The only time that it would is if you receive an extra entry for signing up (alot of blog contests use this). Also although it does not increase your chances, some sweeps will require you to sign up for their newsletter to enter.

As judge noted, unless there is an asterisk { * } denoting something is required, it will not affect your chances of winning.

However - some sponsors will provide private links to enter special promos, or even 1x use codes via their newsletters, so pay attention to the comments and after awhile, you'll know which ones to sign up for!

Actually -- I would like to chime in :)

I would say "some" sponsors may look at that... depends on the size of the company/prize/etc...

while most larger companies 'probably' wouldn't unless they actually specified that, smaller mom & pop shops 'may', simply because you need to remember that sweepstakes are ultimately run by individiduals, and while it may be a random computer selection, ultimately an individual confirms whether that person is chosen as a winner, or someone else...

so -- answer is -- unlikely -- but for a small percentage (smaller mom & pop sweeps), it may affect your chances...

Good point - but they too have to conform to their own rules, so if they don't require you to accept their newsletter, they can't DQ you if you don't subscribe.

Another thing I thought of - some sweeps, buried in their rules, will state you have to stay subscribed to their newsletter or TWITTER page and/or continue to LIKE their FB page long after the sweeps ends to be eligible.

Like the sweeps ends 4/30/12, but they don't draw/confirm for weeks/months, so don't unsubscribe at the end date!
