This whole Twitter and Facebook thing

I just don't get it. I really don't want to be on facebook. I don't even understand Twitter. But it seems like more and more contests require them.

So is it possible to have a very private facebook account, one that I don't show up on google? It is not that I am in the witness protection program, but I just don't want people wanting to add me as friends and I don't want my profile picture to pop up on google. I don't want to spend the time and energy that some people spend on facebook.

And what about Twitter? How does that work?

Please help me navigate this new techno age. Thanks :)

Don't feel lonely. I don't facebook, myspace, twetter, twitter, or twatter either! WHAT A COLOSSAL WASTE OF TIME!

AND I don't enter any facebook/twitter contests. Twitter is for twits. And they don't need me. :crazytongue: I don't have a compulsion to post 30 word posts that absolutely nobody in their right mind is ever going to read! I've got better things to do with my time. I don't kinow what the purpose of facebook is ... but I'm sure its just as dumb.

The reason a lot of sweeps are showing up on these "social sites" is so the sweep sponsor can say they "had 5 million hits last week!" (Also notice that most of these sweeps are what I call "junk" sweeps.)

These sites were teenie-bopper phenoms which are now being taken over by commercialistic predators. (sorta like the world wide web)

I hear that facebook has "walls" you can write on (sounds like grafitti, eh?). Hmmm. I can think of another thing you can do on a wall .... involves using a zipper ...

My FB friends are very limited since I tell my friends about my wins. I'm very selective with whom I add as a friend, while some people try & acquire alot of friends. I only joined FB to enter sweepstakes. Twitter is a little different because everything you tweet everyone sees. You have followers & you acquire as many as you like. You are limited to 140 characters so you have to keep it short & sweet. With the sweepstakes you just keep retweeting the contest in order to win. I've won the Bella jacket & laundry supplies from Twitter...it's all about how much time you want to devote to them. I have seen my tweets on google from some blogs I've entered but I haven't seen any FB posts. Hope this helps.

I agree with everyone else. I'm sick of sweeps that require those things too. I don't have Twitter and have no desire to ever start it.

I did open a FB account, but only for sweeps. And if it requires more than just signing on and entering, then forget it.

You can open a FB account and keep it private, that way no one will bother you to become friends.

I am so glad michimom brought this up, I feel the same way and won't enter sweeps requiring FB or Twitter. I too think it is a waste of time.

Thanks for bringing it up and thanks to those who responded with explanations.

i have made seperate twitter and facebook accounts just for sweeping. I use the same email that i use for sweeping. I don't have any friends on those accounts and have very minimal information. If you have a full facebook profile and you "allow access" to an application in order to enter a sweep you are allowing them to view your full profile and on occasion your friends profiles. I don't like that but i didn't want to exclude myself from these sweeps so that was my solution. :sunny:

I use Facebook and love it. Facebook has various privacy settings so that you can set it up to be as private as possible. I don't harrassed by friend requests of people I don't know. If you get a friend request from someone you don't know or care about, you simply click on "Ignore'; and they are none the wiser except that you never approved them. None of my Facebook information, posts, etc., have ever shown up in Google or so on.

People of all ages use Facebook! It seems to be more popular with the adults than other social networks.

P.S. I have won on Facebook! :headbang:

I set up a twitter account so I could enter some sweeps. It is a hassle to me. Sometimes they announce their winners on twitter and you have to check the sponsors tweets along with all your email. It is going to have to be a great prize before I go to the trouble of tweeting. I haven't seen a facebook prize that has encouraged me to create an account there.

Thanks for all the responses! I will read the guide. I have also noticed that fb is being used by business, which means something.

Can you make a fb page so private you are invisible?

I don't want to "ignore" legitimate friends.....I just don't want to fb with them. I would feel bad if an old friend requested me and I "ignored" her. I just don't have the time, energy or inclination to catch up with everyone in my past at this point.

A few months ago, a middle age guy had to oversee a job at my workspace, but didn't really do any work, so he brought his laptop in the week he joined facebook. He laughed and typed and appeared to be having a good ole time. By the end of the week he appeared addicted and I suspected his "age" had decreased, in his own mind, to a high school junior.

You can make your account as private as you like. Believe me, everyone from your past won't be putting in a friend request to you. I know of other people I went to school with on Facebook, and I'm sure they know I'm here; and I'm sure neither have any interest in reconnecting. I'm only reconnected with a handful of people from high school.

Michimom,

I'm not too fond of sweepstakes that use FB or twitter either. I have a FB (Facebook) Act. with all my friends (310 legitimate friends) on it and I sometimes become a "fan" of a product that is in a sweepstakes but never have to add as a "friend". I have a twitter act. but only use it for the sole purpose of "following" the product that the sweepstakes has set-up. I've won one contest by just becoming a follower of the product on Twitter.

It's not to big of a deal, it just requires setting up an account on twitter and just hitting the follow button when prompted and move on to the next sweep. There is no need to really view anything additional unless specified by the sponsor, which I image isn't that typical.

If you set-up any accounts on either, I would also keep much of your info private information "PRIVATE" - no education info, addresses, phone numbers, etc. ;)

I initially opened a Facebook account to stay in touch with relatives. I can share pictures of my grandchildren with my cousins back home and I can see their kids' pics also. When my own kids were little, we loved playing board games. Now, through FB, I can still play games with them. I've currently got three Lexulous (like Scrabble) games going on with them. And I won a nice table arrangement through 1800flowers/facebook just a few weeks ago.

Facebook can get overwhelming if you let it -- but it is totally your choice. I've turned down a lot of friends and unfriended quite a few whose posts were offensive. Like anything else on the internet, it can own you if you aren't careful. Try it -- you might like it!

Hey, it's another sweeps platform, that's all. I'd prefer that the description included "Facebook" or "Twitter" so that I am not disappointed when I click in and realize that it's an FB entry only. For what it's worth, I don't like Text ones either. But those are just my preferences.

If you like Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, Text, Blogger, etc... sweeps, have at it. Your odds of winning are probably better because so many of us don't have the patience for them.

Good luck!

I am a longtime facebook user (I signed up last Saturday). I haven't used it for any sweeps yet, but I did reconnect with an old friend I hadn't seen in 25 years so it definitely has it upside. I kept everything private and have had no one ask me to be a friend. I became a fan of my favorite radio station (Q90FM.com) but haven't got any junk from anyone. I did not upload a picture so no issue there. Give it a try but keep it simple. Do the bare minimum to enter your sweeps and cancel it if you don't like it.

zoodad,

It's absolutely amazing how people locate others on facebook. I've been pleasantly surprised with being reconnected with all my old school friends in addition to people from my elementary years that I would of never thought they would of thought enough of me to look me up after over 20 some years and so many others too. I was flabbergasted of the number of people who look you up on Facebook.

Just don't enter. w/o volumn they fail

I just don't enter the blogs, the facebook, the twitter, etc. I figure they need volume to succeed in those venues. I don't waste my time. Heck I can't even win a DVD sweepstakes when I enter the regular way. So I say don't patronage them and they'll stop offering them, on blogs, facebook, myspace, twitter, etc.. Refuse to follow their lead. They control when we choose to follow. If we refuse to follow their lead, we control. My opinion.

I'm fairly new to FB.....

If you look at someone's profile, is there a way they can find out it was you? I've been looking up people I went to school with, and today 3 of those people asked to be my friend.

Just wondering if there's a way to see who's viewed you

There is NOT a way for people to see that you viewed their profile or for you to see who looks at yours. If you have mutual friend or information in your profile about where you went to school facebook may have suggested to you or them that you migth know eachother. it's their new (rather annoying) feature to "help" you connect with people.
